EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM - JOHANNES BRAHMS
Torrington Parish Church 21st March 2015
North Devon Journal Review
Margaret Jury listened to Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, sung by the Winkleigh Singers at St Michael and All Angels Church, Torrington.
THE choir, well known for its excellence, did not disappoint. The sound was extremely well balanced and the acoustics at Torrington lent additional resonance to the overall effect. There were faultless performances by bass soloist John Smith whose mellow tones were spine tingling, and soprano soloist Tina Gladwin, her voice soaring impeccably to the highest notes.
Accompanists Tom Bayliss and Andrew Daldorph on grand piano showed their versatility and brilliance. The organ solos by Andrew (Liszt's Ad nos, ad salutarem undam and Brahms' Prelude and Fugue in G minor) explored the very nadir and zenith of the magnificent Willis organ.
This was an evening well spent in delightful company with the rafters echoing to such inspiring and impressively performed music.
